At Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East's Premier Racecourse. We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here.
Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and in this situation we ensure that horses are given the very best in veterinary care.
There are three Veterinary Surgeons here on course to ensure that should any horse need assistance they will be attended to within seconds. The first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to aid this our Ground Staff team will erect screens around any injured horse. Once the diagnosis is made one of our horse ambulances will transport the horse back to the stables where further assessment and treatment can be undertaken.
Occasionally it may be the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery. If this is the case the Veterinary Team may take the decision to put the horse down immediately. In these circumstances, we must remember that the decision is taken in the horse's best interests.
