The Eider Chase is a prestigious steeplechase held here at Newcastle Racecourse every February and has long been regarded as one of the most demanding staying chases in the jumps calendar.
First run in 1952, the Eider Chase has a long and proud history and is often considered an important trial for the Grand National, with many horses using the race as valuable preparation for the famous Aintree contest.
From 2027, we will be trialling a reduced distance for the Eider Chase, with the race run over approximately 3 miles and 6 furlongs. The distance was previously increased from four miles to 4 miles and 1 furlong in 2021 to facilitate a change to the starting position, moving the start away from the bend.
We believe trialling the shorter distance will retain the character, identity and demanding nature of the Eider Chase, while potentially making the race attractive to a broader pool of staying chasers.
We will review the impact of the change following the 2027 running, including feedback from trainers and participants, before considering the longer-term distance of the race.
The 2025 winner of the Eider Chase was Knockanore, ridden by Freddie Mitchell and trained by Ryan Potter.
In 2026, Anglers Crag regained the title with a brilliant victory under Danny McMenamin, adding a second Eider Chase success following his memorable triumph in 2024.
