The VirginBet Eider Chase is back at Newcastle Racecourse this February. Settle in for a Saturday afternoon of jump racing, headlined by a true test of stamina that has long been an important trial for Grand National hopefuls. For 2027, we are trialling a reduced distance of approximately 3 miles and 6 furlongs, while retaining the challenge and character that the Eider Chase is known for.
This is a proper test. Approximately 3 miles and 6 furlongs, fences to tackle and a long way to go before the finish. The Eider Chase is one of Newcastle’s stand-out racing days, bringing together horses ready to prove their stamina in one of the toughest challenges of the season. Get close to the action by the rail and hear the crowd build as they head towards the closing stages.
The reduced distance is being trialled for the 2027 running as part of a continued review of the race and its place within the National Hunt programme. The impact of the change will be reviewed following the race before the longer-term distance of the Eider Chase is considered.
There is plenty for racing fans to get stuck into throughout the afternoon. Watch the horses in the parade ring, find your spot trackside and see the action unfold right in front of you. Bring your friends and family, wrap up for a February afternoon and enjoy Saturday racing at Newcastle.
