Newcastle Racecourse is pleased to announce amendments to the Eider Chase, which will take effect as of the 2020 renewal on Saturday 22 February.

Previously run over 4m 122yds (and referred to as 4m1f), the race will now be run over a distance of 4m1f & 56 yds.  Moving the start backwards by 154 yards will mean that an extra fence is added to the race, making a total of 26 to be jumped.

Previously, the first fence offered a challenge for horses and riders due to its position going into a bend with the race often at, or close to, the maximum field size of eighteen.  The position of the new first fence will allow for it to be extended without encroaching on the Hurdle Course, and give horses and riders more room and a better sight of the obstacle.

Newcastle Racecourse Clerk of the Course, James Armstrong, commented, “The Eider Chase is one of the highlights of the National Hunt season at Newcastle and often attracts fields at, or near, the limit of eighteen.

“As such, we have taken the decision to move the start back so that both jockeys and horses have a better sight of the new first fence, with much more space for them to negotiate the obstacle.  We believe that these steps will make a positive effect to the start of the race without any impact on the unique test that the race offers both horses and jockeys”.

The Eider Chase was won in 2019 by Crosspark, trained by Caroline Bailey and ridden by Jamie Moore.  For more information on the 2020 race, or to buy tickets please click here.
